FALLING SKY

Falling Sky: Image

The world relies so heavily on the internet, creating a fragile world that can be completely crippled in an instant. The building was designed to resemble this kind of heavy reliance on something so easily destroyed. The first floors of the majority of the buildings are all glass to represent the fragile, while the second floors of all the buildings are solid and heavy in appearance to represent our societies as a whole. Under the solid portions of the building, the ceilings are made to resemble the bottom of a jagged heavy stone to make the large mass above present in the interior spaces. The analogous colors, green and orange used in the spaces also reflect the contrast between light and heavy. These colors were paired with light gray polished concrete, glass, and platinum-white surfaces.

The program consisted of creating a building that would be able to serve humans in the future while having three different functions, social, housing, and commercial. The site that was used for the project was located on 415 N. New Braunfels in East San Antonio, which currently holds a grocery store. One of the requirements was to use the preexisting structure and incorporate it into the new design. The project only called for the development of social spaces that would fulfill the needs of different types of people as well as relate to one another. The spaces that were created in my building include a restaurant, an outdoor theater, a community garden, and baking classroom.

The restaurant is two-stories, with a kitchen on the first floor, while the dining area is located on the second floor. The ceiling incorporates two skylights for two growing trees to bring the outside in. Portions of the ceiling are left flat, and lined with thin LED lights and trace the outlines of the walkways.

For the pottery retail shop, customers can come in and design and print their own pottery. The ceiling is brought down low and left open in some spots with light shining through to highlight the pottery being displayed. On one side of the shop are individual design stations with computers, while on the opposite side of the shop, 3D printers are located in a glass-enclosed room.
